new york compute club is a pooled gpu cluster that lives in new york. members rack their own hardware in apartments, offices, and one very good basement in red hook, and the club schedules jobs across all of it. you can bring a card, bring a workload, or bring both. both is our favorite.
the idea comes from an old crypto saying, not your keys, not your coins. if an exchange holds your coins, what you really hold is an iou from the exchange. open weights have ended up in the same place. you are licensed to run the model, but it doesn't fit on anything you own, so in practice you rent an 8x h100 node from one of a few clouds at whatever price they set that month. not your compute, not your model.
our answer is to own the building. every node in the club is member hardware inside the city limits. jobs travel between nodes as sealed boxes, so the scheduler only ever sees ciphertext, a node id, and a wattage number. the node that runs your job can read your job, which is why you pick your node.
